It’s no secret that getting kids to cooperate for a photo shoot can be quite the challenge. From squirmy toddlers to moody teenagers, there are many factors that can make capturing the perfect shot a daunting task. However, with the right preparation and a bit of patience, you can ensure a successful photo shoot with your children. Especially if you’re like me, and have some neuro-spiciness sprinkled in there.
One of the first steps to preparing your kids for a successful photo shoot is to choose a Premium portrait photographer who specializes in working with children.
A professional photographer who has experience with kids of all neuro-types will know how to engage and capture their unique personalities, ensuring that the final photos reflect their true essence.
Before the photo shoot, make sure to communicate with your children about what to expect. For our son who is autistic we use a social story and talk about what we will do and that makes a big difference for him! We do something similar for our daughter who is adhd as well. If you need some help with a social story let me know and I would love to help! Explain to them that the photographer will be taking their picture and that it’s important to listen to their instructions. Encourage them to be themselves and have fun during the shoot, as genuine smiles and expressions make for the best photos.
On the day of the shoot, make sure your kids are well-rested and well-fed. A tired or hungry child is more likely to be fussy and uncooperative, so ensure they have had a good night’s sleep and a healthy meal beforehand. Dress them in comfortable and coordinating outfits that reflect their personalities, but avoid clothing with busy patterns or logos that can be distracting in photos. Taking a bath or shower the night before is much better than the day of your session in my own experience! I also suggest having a “fashion show” to try on different outfits prior to your shoot! It’s a fun way to get them excited and engaged in the experience. Plus this might help rule out any awkward fits, sensory issues with fabric for the neuro-divergent crew and to feel out any protests prior to the day of. I for one have a few picky 5 year olds who believe she knows best when it comes to fashion and as you may already know that a 5 year olds fashion sense isn’t usually posh or demure unless miss match patterns and neon colors is the vibe you’re aspiring for.
During the photo shoot, it’s important to stay relaxed and patient. Children can sense when their parents are stressed, so try to maintain a positive attitude and encourage them to be themselves. After all we want smiles so strong corrections tend to give the opposite outcome. Our goal is a fun and positive experience! Allow the photographer to take the lead and guide your kids through different poses and expressions, while also capturing candid moments that showcase their true personalities. Remember that while you know your child the best; we know how to bring out their best and have learned how to create authentic moments that will allow them to shine.
It’s also helpful to bring along some of your children’s favorite toys or snacks to keep them entertained during breaks in the shoot. This can help them relax and feel more comfortable in front of the camera, leading to more natural and authentic photos.
After the photo shoot, be sure to reward your kids for their hard work and cooperation. Whether it’s a treat, a special outing, or a fun activity, showing them appreciation for their efforts will make them more likely to participate in future photo shoots. For our kiddos it’s the park, ice cream or an art activity. For my youngest it’s getting to go to Target to look at all the alexa devices. Whatever motivates your kiddo to stay engaged honestly.
Let’s be real, preparing your kids for a successful photo shoot with a premium portrait photographer requires communication, patience, and preparation. It can feel hard, overwhelming and exhausting. But have no fear! You have me here to guide you, support you and keep it stress free and fun for everyone! We don’t strive for perfection, honestly tho, I have felt some pretty perfect moments captured behind that lens, no, honestly our biggest goal is to create a fun and authentic experience. Not because we don’t intend or plan to take amazing photographs of your awesome family! For the reason that by creating a relaxed fun experience amazing, beautiful and stunning moments will happen naturally. I simply just need to be present in the moment with you.
Also one more not your Autistic, adhd, neuro-spicy or whatever, brain type you or they may have, is absolutely welcome and safe here. We come with lots of patience and resilience as someone who is AUDHD and with an autistic kiddo and an adhd kiddo. We are here for all of it!
